Made Expo to honour winners of the Instanthouse competition

The 3 winners of the international competition Instanthouse, promoted by Federlegno-Arredo in cooperation with Regione Lombardia and the Milan Polytechnic, were announced recently. The awards will be presented during the second edition of MADE expo, the international building and architecture exhibition to be held from 4 to 7 February 2009 at the Milan Rho exhibition centre.

Open to all young people enrolled at architecture and engineering faculties in Italy and abroad, the purpose of the competition is to design a single modular living unit meeting the needs of temporary accommodation for young people in the city of Milan during Expo 2015.

Of the 74 projects from all over the world, the winning entry was made by a group of students from the university of Bologna engineering faculty. The jury, consisting of Alessandro Balducci and Remo Dorigati (Milan Polytechnic), Fulvio Irace (Milan Triennale) and Andrea Negri (chairman of MADE eventi srl), was unanimous in its assessment: outstanding ability to articulate open and closed spaces and volumes through the use of stairs, materials and proportions that integrate well with the urban and metropolitan landscape.

Second prize went to two students from the Architecture course of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, who submitted a compositional module made of wood in keeping with the themes of landscape and environment.

In third place was a project presented by two architecture students at the University of Ferrara which stood out for the appropriate use of experimental and eco-sustainable materials.

A special mention went to the project submitted by an Architecture graduate at Milan Polytechnic, which was considered particularly original for its internally hollowed out volume that produces in negative and positive the properties of space and furnishing.

The winning project will be built to full scale while the second and third placed projects, together with the special mentions, will be exhibited as maquettes in a display coordinated by professors Giancarlo Floridi and Massimiliano Spadoni from Milan Polytechnic, Architecture and Planning Department, in the reception area of halls 6/10.
