Rheology goes down a storm

18/07/07 - Ceramics technicians from the Sassuolo district get fired up over rheology.
A seminar organized by Acimac and the Italian Ceramics Society in Fiorano Modenese last week attracted more than 200 personnel from the tile industry, machinery and plants sectors and glaze, colour and raw material producers.
This eagerly awaited and much appreciated event proved the need for technical training and skills updating for specialists in the ceramics sector.

Rheology is a science providing useful information on the deformation and flow of solid and fluid structures. It has a key role in numerous phases of production from application in ceramic raw materials suspended in water (slips), glazes and inks, to forming and firing.
For example, knowledge of the precise behaviour of materials as they begin to melt can improve planarity and eliminate deformations. In short, the application of rheology in ceramics can enhance productivity and reduce operating costs.

To deepen this issue Sala has published a technical handbook “Rheology applied to ceramics”, which reconciles theory with practice and scientific considerations with operational requirements.
The book helps readers understand the processes that take place in the factory, what they have to do to establish the best operating conditions, rationalise processed and stabilise the technological parameters including suggestions for possible solutions.
